InPrivate Filtering
Turn it on:
<CTRL> + <SHIFT> + <F>
or
Click on the icon (bottom right, the one with the lock and the curved arrow).
or
Click on the down arrow next to the icon to select: Automatically Block / Choose content to block / Off / Settings
Permanently turn InPrivate Filtering on:
1) <Win> + <R> --> regedit.exe
2) HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Savety \ PrivacIE
3) create new DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it StartMode
4) double-click it and select one of the following values:
--> 0 = InPrivate Filtering is turned off (default setting of IE8)
--> 1 = InPrivate Filtering is set to Automatically Block
--> 2 = InPrivate Filtering is set to Choose content to block
Note: If the Savety \ PrivacyIE folders cannot be found that means that the InPrivate Filtering has not been turned on, yet. Open the IE and turn the InPrivate Filtering on (any setting). Now return to the Registry window and refresh (F5) it. The Savety \ PrivacyIE folders should now be there.
Group Policy settings:
1) <Win> + <R> --> gpedit.msc
2) User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Internet Explorer \ InPrivate

Quick Search Box
Can be turned off via the Local Policy Settings (should work for Vista and Win 7 with IE 7 & 8):
- Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Internet Explorer \ Prevent Internet Explorer Search box from displaying (Enabled)
or
- User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Internet Explorer \ Prevent Internet Explorer Search box from displaying (Enabled)
Note: Configuring only the second option (in User Configuration) seemed to work (without configuring the Policy in Computer Configuration). Just setting the Policy in Computer Configuration did not remove the Quick Search bar.
